Bro. Michael Hooks was baptized at the
Southside Church of Christ as a teenager
in 1984. As a youth at the Southside
congregation he became actively involved
in many church activities including visiting
the sick, assisting with the evangelism
ministry, participating in worship service
leadership, music and youth ministries.

After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the University of California,
Berkeley where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He continued his education at the
University of Southern California and California State University earning a master’s
degree in education and three educational credentials. Currently, he works as a
high school counselor for the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he has
been employed for over 12 years.
Bro. Hooks has always enjoyed studying and teaching the Word of God. His
favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which
strengtheneth me”. He has been a Bible teacher at Southside for the past nine
years. Currently, he teaches the Sunday morning Men’s Bible Study class and
often delivers special Bible lessons during Vacation Bible School and Children’s
Worship. He is the head of the Men’s Fellowship committee and plays an active
role on Southside’s Finance committee.
Bro. Hooks was appointed as a deacon at Southside in 2005. In this role he
continues to support the work of the church by assisting the elders in meeting the
needs of Southside’s membership.
Bro. Hooks enjoys spending quality time with his wife Sonia (formerly Sonia
Baccus) and his twin daughters, Courtney and Sydney. He is an avid golfer and
enjoys traveling with his family to tropical destinations.
